The Our Lady of the Lakes FIRST Robotics Team from Waterford Michigan visited the Murray A. Percival Co. this month to demonstrate one of their robots performing a complicated task and to raise awareness of their objectives, goals and requirements. The team of 6 students dazzled our staff with a very well designed presentation of their team’s accomplishments, the FIRST Robotics program and their need for companies like ours to participate in such a program. All were instrumental in developing the presentation and all took some part in the presentation. We were quite impressed with and proud of how the young adults carried themselves.
Here are some of their accomplishments:
- This is OLL’s third year in existence
- There are nine students on the competition team
- There are eight lower classmen teams
Last years awards include:
- Waterford Tournament 3 alliance captain
- Waterford Tournament Imagery Award
- Qualified for Michigan Sate Championship
- Qualified for World Championship
Their lead mentor Rich Topolewski had this to say….
“Laker Robotic wants to inspire young people to be leaders by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering & technology skills; inspire innovation; and foster well-rounded capable adults with self-confidence and the ability to communicate and lead. We also encourage our young men and women to become strong, participative citizens by providing their time, talent and treasure to those less fortunate who share similar goals and dreams.
The school provides great facilities support, like a meeting space and some custom built work benches, but the school itself provides no direct financial support. Although when we made it to the World Championship the kids in the school had jean-day fundraiser to raise money for the team.
Last year NASA’s $5000 grant along with our other sponsors, both large and small, enabled us to go to the World Championship last year. The NASA startup 2 year grants have ended so we are in need of sponsors to fill that hole, so if we again can qualify for the World championship the students will be able to go.”
